cystoid macular edema

Cystoid macular edema occurs when fluid within the vitreous begins to look similar to a cysts.
The macula is affected and may lead to inflammation within the retina. There tends to not be any pain associated with the condition. However, vision may be blurred depending on the extent of impact on the macula. Most often, the peripheral vision is spared, and the central vision is affected.
Steroids in the form of eyedrops may be given to reduce inflammation. Laser therapy may also be given to reduce swelling around the macula. In addition, an injection of Antivascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) is given to help manage the inflammation within the eye.
