April 8th, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Total Solar Eclipse – April 8th, 2024

What is the solar eclipse?

The solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks the sun, a process which goes through the phases of a partial eclipse, then to a total solar eclipse, and then a partial eclipse again.

The solar eclipse will cross parts of North America on April 8th, 2024 and will encompass all of the geographic regions near our clinics from Collinto Grayson and Fanin County.  Dallas, Plano, Frisco, Allen, Sherman, Denison, to Paris, Texas!

This total solar eclipse will not occur again in North America for another 20 years!

During the partial phases of the solar eclipse, you must wear ISO certified sunglasses!

  • First, the partial eclipse will roughly last 1 hour
  • Second, the full eclipse will occur when the moon is completely covering the sun, it will only last 1 to 2 minutes and the daylight will give away to a sudden darkening and the sun will glow around the moon. The temperature may drop for a few degrees as well. You can briefly remove your glasses to view this part of the eclipse but be prepared to look away and put your sunglasses on before the partial eclipse returns
  • Third, the partial eclipse will return as the moon moves from obscuring the sun

Whether during an eclipse or not, basic sunglasses are not sufficient to view the sun. This is because the intense energy from the sun can cause a condition called solar retinopathy, which can permanently affect your vision.

Some Tips for viewing the solar eclipse:

  • Only wear ISO 12312-2 certified sunglasses; if you are concerned your glasses are not from a reputable source, do not take the chance and view the eclipse
  • Be prepared, have a plan to be out before the solar eclipse begins and be ready with your ISO 12312-2 certified sunglasses for all the phases of the eclipse
  • Do not view the sun indirectly through telescope, binoculars, mirrors, etc.
  • Supervise children during this time to ensure their eyes are protected
